Mount Olympus 2012

The Olymp- in the old greek mythology the home of the gods and today still a legendary mountain. An extraordinary ski-touring-trip from Poseidon to Zeus.

The start was at the sea, the mysterious empire of Poseidon, the goal was the peak of the Olymp, after the greek mythology the home of the gods and the empire of Zeus.

On a rainy day at the end of March Schorsch Nickaes, Patrick Jost and Benedikt Böhm starting this unusual race.

Here they go directly from the beach on their bikes. After 25 kilometers and by now 1100 meters above sea level the three athletes continue their tour by foot. At the snow line they change to their skis. Even the weather is bad they are on high spirits and were forced to take a break after 4 more hours. because the situation of the snow was not safe. After one night at the Kakalos Lodge ( 2648 m ) they reached the highest peak of Greece the next morning only after 40 minutes ascent ,the summit of Mount Olympos ( 2918 m ) !

They go down on skis on a rough and steep slope through a 300 m long bold gorge. After a not even seven hours race for 68 km and 3.260 m of hight they reached their starting point. A cool bath is now what they need!

"Close to the gods. Greece has much more to offer than the sun, beaches and the sea. I was always interested in contrasts. It was an amazing experience to start directly from the sea to reach with a Nonstop Push the highest mountain of Greece. The Olymp is almost as high as the Zugspitze."
